History

Bombay Stock Exchange – History

  • It started in the 1850s when a group of roughly 20 stockbrokers met in the streets of Bombay under banyan trees.
  • As the group grew in size, their site shifted regularly. In 1874, the group relocated to what is today known as Dalal Street (which means broker's street).
  • Finally, famous trader Premchand Roychand established the Native Share and Stock Brokers Association, which was later renamed the Bombay Stock Exchange, in 1875.
  • In August 1957, it became the first stock exchange in the country to be recognized by the government under the Securities Contracts Regulation Act.
  • It launched the S&P BSE SENSEX index (also known as the BSE 30) in 1986, which is an index of the 30 most well-known and financially healthy companies listed on the BSE. It is the pulse of the Indian domestic stock market.
  • It released the DOLLAR-30, a dollar-linked SENSEX derivative, in 2001.
  • The BSE moved away from open outcry trading and toward an electronic trading system in 1995. BOLT is the name of the screen-based automated trading platform (an acronym for BSE On-Line Trading).
  • The BSE received the Information Security Management System Standard BS 7799-2-2002 certification through the BOLT, making it the world's second and the country's first stock exchange.
  • The Central Depository Services Ltd, one of the exchange's subsidiaries, also provides depository services. BSE created India INX, the country's first foreign exchange, in 2016.
  • The BSE issued public shares in 2017 and is traded on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
