Annual Rings sometimes called growth rings are concentric circles that can be seen in cross-sections of woody stems or trunks. Annual rings are used to calculate the Dendro-Chronology (age of trees), and their thickness provides information about the environment (Paleo-Climatology). Temperature and water availability are two external factors that affect the growth ring's size. What exactly are Annual Rings?

  • The increment of wood generated during a single growth period can be seen as an annual ring in a cross-section of the stem of a woody plant.
  • Every year, the cambium layer creates a layer of xylem, whose vessels are larger and thinner in the spring and smaller and thicker in the summer, producing contrast between the rings.
