Rita, a young enthusiastic manager has joined an organization as a project co-ordinator. The project head counsels her to socialize less with non-management employees; whereas the product head tells her to learn more about market issues. She should socialize more with the non-management employees. Rita is confused, she is facing
Intra-role conflict
Role conflict arises when a person faces incompatible expectations, and the type of conflict depends on whether those expectations attach to one role or to several.
Rita occupies a single role, that of project co-ordinator. Two different role senders - the project head and the product head - hold opposite expectations about how she should perform that one role, one telling her to socialize less with non-management employees and the other telling her to socialize more. When different people send conflicting expectations about the same role, the situation is intra-role conflict, and that is what Rita faces.
Inter-role conflict is different: it arises when a person occupies two or more roles whose demands clash, such as the competing pulls of being a manager and being a parent. Rita has not been given a second role here, so this does not apply. Interdepartmental conflict describes friction between departments as units rather than incompatible expectations placed on one individual, and hierarchical conflict refers to friction between different levels of the organisation, neither of which is what the situation describes.
Hence Rita is facing intra-role conflict.
