Give an account of the formation and function of thrombocytes

Thrombocytes, also known as platelets, are small, anucleated cell fragments crucial for hemostasis (blood clotting). They originate from large precursor cells called megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. Megakaryocytes undergo endomitosis, becoming polyploid, and then extend pseudopods into blood sinusoids, releasing thousands of cytoplasmic fragments—the thrombocytes—into circulation.

Their primary function is to prevent blood loss. Upon vascular injury, thrombocytes adhere to the exposed subendothelium, form a primary platelet plug at the site of injury, and release various factors (e.g., ADP, thromboxane A2) that promote further platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction. They also provide a surface for the activation of coagulation factors, leading to fibrin formation and a stable clot.
