A dam is a barrier that blocks water flow and results in a reservoir being built. Dams are primarily designed in order to use water to generate electricity. Hydroelectricity is known as this type of electricity.

An arch dam is a concrete dam that in the plan is curved upstream. It is built so that the hydrostatic pressure presses on the arch (force of the water against it), allowing the arch to slightly straighten and stabilize the surface as it pushes through its base or abutments. In order to support the structure and pressures, an arch dam is most ideal for narrow canyons or gorges with steep walls of solid rock.
Gravity dams are built from concrete or stone masonry. By using only the weight of the material and its resistance against the base to oppose the horizontal pressure of water pushing against it they are built to hold backwater. These are built in a way that is stable and independent of each part of the dam.
This dam has the features of an arch dam as well as a gravity dam. It is a dam that bends in a narrowing curve upstream that channels much of the water pressure towards the rock walls of the canyon. The water's internal compression of the dam decreases the lateral (horizontal) force that acts on the dam.
A barrage is a type of low-head, diversion dam consisting of a series of wide gates that can be opened or closed to regulate the amount of water that passes through. This helps the framework to monitor and maintain the elevation of river water upstream for use in irrigation and other systems.
A massive artificial dam is an embankment dam. Usually, it is formed by the positioning and compaction of a complex semi-plastic mound of varying dirt, sand, clay, or rock compositions. It has a semi-pervious natural waterproof coating and a dense, impermeable core for its surface.
Rock-fill dams are embankments with an impervious zone of compacted free-draining granular soil. " A large proportion of large particles are often present in the used soil, hence the term "rock-fill."

A concrete-face rock-fill dam (CFRD) on its upstream face is a rock-fill dam with concrete slabs. In order to avoid leaks, this architecture provides the concrete slab as an impervious wall and even a frame without regard for uplift strain.
Earth-fill dams are built as a plain embankment of well-compacted earth, also called earthen dams, rolled-earth dams or simply earth dams. A homogeneous rolled-earth dam is built entirely of one type of stone but can have a layer of the drain to catch sewage.
