The Major Indian River Systems - NCERT Geography UPSC Notes

Rivers play a major role in the development of an economy. They provide drinking water, means of transportation, irrigation for the crops, generate power and are also a means of livelihood for thousands of people.

Most of the river systems in India either merge with the Bay of Bengal in the east or with the Arabian Sea in the west. Some of them also have inland drainage. But the origin point of all the major river systems can be traced back to the three major water sources.

These sources are The Himalayan and the Karakoram range, the Chota Nagpur Plateau and the Vindhya and Satpura Range and the Western Ghats.

Major River Systems: Indus River System

  • The Indus River System has its origin in the Northern Slopes of the Kailash Mountain Range in Tibet near Lake Manasarovar.
  • The course of the river is in the northwest direction, which passes through Tibet and enters India through Jammu and Kashmir forming a very beautiful gorge through its path.
  • Tributaries such as Zaskar, Shyok, Nubra and Hunza meet this river system in Kashmir.
  • The Indus River System flows through Ladakh, Baltistan and Gilgit region and also passes through the Ladakh and Zanskar Range.
  • Before entering Pakistan, it goes through the Himalayas by a 5181-meter deep gorge near Attock, which lies north to the Nanga Parbat and then takes a southwest direction towards Pakistan.
  • This river system has a total length of 2897 km from its origin point to a point near Karachi where it flows into the Arabian Sea.
  • The main tributaries of the Indus River System in India are Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej.
Brahmaputra River

Major River Systems: Brahmaputra River System

  • Like the Indus River System, the Brahmaputra River System also has its origin in the Mansarovar Lake, which coincidentally is also home to the river Sutlej.
  • In regards to length, the Brahmaputra is slightly longer than Indus, however, most of the river’s course lies outside of the Indian Territory.
  • It flows in the east direction, tracing a path parallel to the Himalayas and takes a U-turn after reaching the Namcha Barwa and enters the Indian Territory through Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Brahmaputra River is known as the Dihang River in Arunachal Pradesh and as Tsangpo in Tibet.
  • In India, the Brahmaputra mainly flows through the states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and has channels throughout Assam.
  • It is known as one of the largest rivers in India with respect to volume as it passes through regions that experience heavy rainfall in the rainy season.
Ganga River System

Major River Systems: Ganga River System

  • Ganga River System originates from the Gangotri Glacier in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas at the height of 4100 meters above sea level.
  • It is also known as Bhagirathi at the place of its origin.
  • The mainstream of this river flows through the Himalayas and at DevPrayag two other streams- the Mandakini and the Alaknanda also join its course.
  • The Ganga River System is mainly the combination of these three streams.
  • This river, after covering a distance of 2525 km from its origin point, merges into the Bay of Bengal at Ganga Sagar in the state of West Bengal.
  • The main tributaries of river Ganga are Yamuna, Ram Ganga, Son, Damodar, Gomati, Ghagra and Sapta Kosi.
Yamuna River System

  • Originating 6387 meters above the mean sea level from the Yamunotri Glacier at the Bandarpoonch peak in the Uttarkashi district of the state of Uttarakhand, this river flows through the states of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and covers the Union Territory of Delhi as well.
  • The river traverses 1367 km from its origin to Allahabad, where it merges with River Ganga.
  • The main tributaries of the River Yamuna are Hindon, Chambal, Sind, Betwa and Ken.
Narmada River System

  • The Narmada River System is located in the center of India and is like a boundary between the Northern and Southern India
  • It is 1289 km long and is one of the three major rivers of the peninsular region that run in the east to the west direction along with rivers Tapti and Mahi.
  • It originates in the peaks of Amarkantak Hills in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
  • It flows through the Mandla Hills for the first 320 km of its course, then reaches Jabalpur through the Marble Rocks and finally enters the Narmada Valley between the Vindhya and Satpura Range.
  • It then travels in the western direction towards the Gulf of Cambay.
  • Passing through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, this 1312 km long river finally merges in the Arabia Sea in the Bharuch district of Gujarat
Tapi River System

  • Tapi is also a river system that is located in the central part of the country.
  • At 724 km, it is one of the major rivers in the peninsular region, running in the direction of east to west.
  • It originates from the Satpura Region that is located in the south of the state of Madhya Pradesh and flows in the westward direction.
  • It flows through some very historic regions such as the Nimar Region in Madhya Pradesh, Khandesh in Maharashtra and east Vidarbha regions in the northwest corner of the Deccan Plateau and South Gujarat.
  • It finally empties in the Gulf of Cambay in the Arabian Sea in the state of Gujarat.
  • The Western Ghats or the Sahyadri range finds its origin towards the south of the Tapti River near the Gujarat and Maharashtra border.
  • The main tributaries of the river are Purna, Panzara, Girna, Bori, Aner and Waghu River.
Godavari River System

Major River Systems: Godavari River System

  • Often referred to as Vridha Ganga or Dakshin Ganga, Godavari runs the second-longest course in India and is about 1450 km long.
  • This river originates at Trimbakeshwar, which is near Nasik and Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra, which is only 380 km away from the Arabian Sea.
  • It flows in the southeast direction across central and south India through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh and flows out in the Bay of Bengal.
  • It forms a very fertile delta at Rajahmundry, where the river splits into two streams.
  • Some of the tributaries of the Godavari River System include Manjira, Bindusara, Indravati and Sabari river
  • Asia’s largest rail-cum-road bridge is on the river Godavari, linking Kovvur and Rajahmundry.
Krishna River System

Major River Systems: Krishna River System

  • One of the longest rivers in India at about 1300 km long, the Krishna River originates at Mahabaleshwar in the state of Maharashtra and traditionally the origin of the river is through a spout from the mouth of a cow statue in the ancient temple of Lord Mahadev.
  • It passes through Sangli and reaches the Bay of Bengal at Hamsaladeevi in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
  • This river mainly passes through the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
  • Tunga and Bhadra rivers join together to form the most important tributary of the Krishna River System known as the Tungabhadra River.
  • Some other tributaries of this river are Bhima, Ghataprabha, Yerla, Music and Koyna rivers.

  • Also known as Dakshin Ganga, it is considered one of the most sacred rivers by the Hindus.
  • It starts from Talakaveri in the Western Ghats, which is almost 5000 feet above sea level.
  • It flows from the Western Ghats towards the state of Karnataka and then towards Tamil Nadu and finally merges in the Bay of Bengal.
  • It is also known as the lifeblood of the ancient kingdoms and modern cities of South India as it helps in the irrigation of agriculture and has done so for centuries.
  • The major tributaries of Cauvery are Kapila, Shimsha, Hemavati, Lakshmana Tirtha, Bhavani, Lokapavani and Amaravati.
Mahanadi River System

Major River Systems: Mahanadi River System

  • The Mahanadi River System is the largest river in the state of Odisha and is also the third-largest in the peninsula of India.
  • The length of the river is about 851 km and it covers an area of approximately 141,600 km2.
  • This basin has a tropical climate and also experiences rainfall of around 142 cm annually.

It originates in Bastar Hills of Madhya Pradesh and flows over the Eastern Ghats and finally merges in the Bay of Bengal. Hirakud Dam is built over this river, which is the longest earthen dam in the world.
