Utsav Gautam qualified IAS UPSC CSE exam with 33rd rank in 2017 in the 4th attempt. He scored 1072 on the final merit list of the IAS (UPSC CSE) Exam. At the time of preparation, he mostly used electronics gadgets such as desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile for preparation and spent 1 - 2 hours on the online websites for exam preparation.

For the prelims exam, he basically took immense help from google and Wikipedia. However, at the time of IAS Mains preparation, it was minimal. For note-taking, he used Microsoft one-note and during the preparation of the last attempt, the primary focus was on writing and developing the answers and dealing with the difficult questions in a unique approach.

Utsav Gautam has chosen Mathematics as an optional paper. Along with the practice of answer writing, he read the Hindu, India’s world on RSTV, etc.

Preparation for IAS UPSC CSE Interview

The mock tests of Vajiram, KSG etc were beneficial to him. According to him, the mock tests are not totally reliable because they basically focus on the question-answer session. He revised astronomy current affairs, Hindu newspaper in the morning to stay up-to-date for the Interview session. Also, he stayed in Mukherjee Nagar for 1 month to avoid travelling before the UPSC Interview round.

Ques. What is the reason to join the Indian Civil Services?

Ans. At the time of the school day, he followed newspapers regularly. From that time, he realized that Civil Services is one of the professions which will offer a diversity of work, opportunity of leadership at a very early age, better career prospects and this is the parental aspiration as well.

Ques. What is the reason behind not choosing the private sector?

Ans. The difference between the Indian Civil Services and the private sector is that he would be able to contribute to the nation’s progress and in the private sector, it would take years to reach the desired stage. On the other hand, the roles and responsibility of the civil services and career growth have also helped to choose IAS as his career.

Ques. Why not joining politics instead of Civil Services?

Ans. Becoming a successful politician takes good financial potentiality and contacts for fights in the elections. The battlefield of the IAS exam is in his palm and it also provides a sense of responsibility at the earlier age of the career.

Ques. What was the reason behind changing from Class X and Class xII?

Ans. He took coaching for the IIT-JEE exam. However, the school and the coaching institute were two sides of the city which caused the change in the choice of school.

Ans. No, it is not included in the syllabus.

Ques. Has the statistics been studied in the school?

Ans. As far as it could be remembered, it was included in the syllabus of Class XI.

Ques. Is it possible to elaborate on this topic?

Ans. Sir, topics such as mean, median, mode, histogram, cumulative frequency etc. have been practised during Class XI.

Ans. It is basically used to measure height and distance, architecture and detecting the trajectory of the ball in cricket.

Ans. A meteoroid is a miniature moving body in the solar system which would turn into a meteor if it enters the earth’s atmosphere. On the other hand, the Asteroid is a celestial substance that is rotating in a certain orbit around the sun. They are basically in the asteroid belt and Kuiper belt whereas the Comet is an object incorporating the volatile compounds orbiting around the sun in a highly elliptical orbit.

Ans. There is no predefined rule. It depends on the case to case basis.

Ans. Mostly the asteroid is the largest among them.

Ques. What is the reason for Comet’s tail?

Ans. The reason is when they arrive near the sun, the volatile compound gets evaporated and the solar wind respells them, which forms the tail.

Ans. The first law of Newton is working. Since the resultant of forces on this book is zero, the acceleration of the books is also zero. Therefore, it is in a state of rest.

Ans. It maintains the Third law of Newton. The gases are released at a certain speed due to the rocket pulses which move in the forward direction.

Ans. Astronomy is the study of the numerous celestial objects and related to the phenomenon such as wormhole, black hole etc. whereas Astrology is related to the predictions of humans, based on the research and study related to the positions of stars and planets.

Ans. While answering this question, he has elaborated about the red dwarf, brown dwarf, supernovae, hypernovae etc.

Ques. Has the schooling been done in air force school?

Ans. No, he took admission as a civilian student.

Ques. What is the lesion received from the preparation period?

Ans. Various things such as about our country, society and the world have been learned. Moreover, maturity and empathy have been infused at the time of preparation.

Ques. What are the sources of learning in your life?

Ans. Observing society is a major source of learning. Movies are also a great source.

Ques. Elaborate about the point of movies?

Ans. The evil side of society is very frequent in the newspapers. However, movies create more impact on our mind through visual and audio presentation. For example, the Marathi movie Sairat has depicted the various evil aspects of society and inspired the audience to make a change.

Ques & Ans. Regarding the job profile, further questions and cross-questions have been asked on a situational case study. He has answered that such situations have occurred many times. Therefore, he has narrated an incident with every tiny bit of details for approximately 6 – 8 minutes.

Ques. Being a captain of a cricket team in the school, between a good friend and a good player, who should be chosen?

Ans. The strength of the opposite team must be assessed. Therefore, selecting the members should be done accordingly.

Ques. Still, which one should be in the team?

Ans. The better player he would choose over a friend.

Ques. If the friend asked about the reason for not selecting him, what would be the answer?

Ans. As he is a friend, he will receive plenty of treats after they win the match. However, as he has not been selected, he would be conveyed this humbly yet firmly.

Overall it can be concluded that the very cordial board, Member 2 and Member 3 were showing an agreeable gesture by nodding their heads at every answer to the question. On the other hand, Joshi sir was writing them. Questions were purely based on DAF.

On the last note, carefully read the instruction sheet which is provided on the day of the personal interview and it is mandatory to bring the prescription for the spectacles.
