Geography is the description of the earth. The term geography was first said by Eratosthenes, a Greek scholar in 276-194 BC. The word has been developed from two words from the Greek language such as geo whose meaning is earth and graphic whose meaning is the description.

Together, it means ‘the description of the earth’. Geography is different from other science subjects but it is closely related to other disciplines. Geography collects data from all the natural and social sciences and analyzes their synthesis.

  3. The third question gives an explanation of the causal relationships between features and the processes and phenomena. These are the questions about why?

A geographer finds out the causal relationship between two or more phenomena. He/She explains the phenomena in a frame of cause and effect relationship, as it not only helps in interpretation but also explains the phenomena in future.

  • Traditional physical geography is connected with geology, meteorology, hydrology, pedology, etc.
  • The natural sciences are connected with geomorphology, climatology, oceanography, soil geography, etc.

  • A geographer should have some knowledge in mathematics and art, particularly in drawing maps.

Physical Geography

  • Geomorphology- It is about the study of landforms, their evolution and related processes.
  • Climatology- It is about the study of the atmosphere and elements of weather, climates, climatic types and regions.
  • Hydrology- It is about the study of water over the surface of the earth including oceans, lakes, rivers and other water bodies and its effect on different lifeforms and their activities like human life.
  • Soil Geography- It is about the study of the formation of soil, soil types, distribution, fertility status and use.

Human Geography

  • Social/Cultural Geography- the study of society and its dynamics and the cultural elements of the society.
  • Population and Settlement Geography (Rural and Urban)- It studies population growth, density, distribution, sex ratio, migration and occupational structure etc. Settlement geography discusses the characteristics of rural and urban settlements.
  • Economic Geography- The economic activities of the people involved in agriculture, industry, tourism, trade, and transport, infrastructure and services, etc. fall in the subject.
  • Historical Geography- The historical processes which are discussed in every region have undergone some historical experiences before reaching the present-day status.
  • Political Geography- It discusses the angle of political events and studies boundaries, relations between neighbouring political units, delimitation of constituencies, election scenarios and develops a framework about the political behaviour of the population.

The development of Biogeography is correlated between physical geography and human geography which includes:

  • Plant Geography- It includes the study of the pattern of natural vegetation and its habitats.
  • Zoo Geography- It is related to the patterns and geographic characteristics of animals and their habitats.
  • Ecology /Ecosystem- It deals with habitats characteristic of species.
  • Environmental Geography- It deals with the realisation of environmental problems like land gradation, pollution.
