Which of the following types of Universities is the least in number in India?
Central Universities
India's higher education system comprises several categories of universities established under different legal provisions, and their numbers vary considerably.
State Universities are established by state legislatures and form the largest category by number, since almost every state has established multiple universities over time.
Private Universities, established through state or central legislation and expanding rapidly in recent decades, also number in the several hundreds.
Deemed Universities, granted deemed-to-be-university status by the central government on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, number over a hundred but are considerably fewer than state or private universities.
Central Universities are established by an Act of Parliament, and being centrally funded and administered, are created far more selectively and sparingly; India has only around fifty central universities, making this the category with the fewest institutions.
Since the establishment of a Central University requires a dedicated Act of Parliament and a central government funding commitment, their growth has been far slower and more limited compared to state, private, or deemed universities. Hence, Central Universities are the least numerous type of university in India.
