The meta university concept was adopted by Delhi University.
A meta university is one in which the boundaries between institutions are deliberately loosened. Students enrolled in one university may take courses offered by another, credits earned in one institution are recognised by the others, and teaching resources, laboratories and faculty are shared across the participating universities. The aim is to let a student assemble a programme suited to their own interests, particularly across disciplines that a single institution may not cover well, and to make better use of resources that would otherwise sit idle in separate campuses.
The idea was promoted in India by the Ministry of Human Resource Development around 2011 and 2012 as part of a wider push towards flexibility and interdisciplinarity in higher education, and Delhi University was the institution associated with taking it up. Its large number of constituent colleges and its concentration of institutions in a single city made it a natural setting for the experiment.
The concept depends on two enabling mechanisms in particular: a choice based credit system, so that credits are comparable and transferable between institutions, and information and communication technology, so that course material and teaching can be shared at a distance.
Assam University, Hyderabad University and Pondicherry University are all Central Universities of standing, but none of them is the institution identified with the meta university initiative.
Hence Delhi University has adopted the meta university concept.
