In Indian society, both private and public support systems function for the aged, though the family continues to be the primary caregiver.

Private Support Systems:
The traditional family remains central, with adult children—often daughters-in-law—providing financial, emotional, and physical care. Communities and neighborhoods also act as informal safety nets, especially in rural areas where neighbors assist with daily needs. In urban spaces, private old-age homes and assisted living facilities are increasingly emerging for those who can afford professional care or lack family support. Additionally, NGOs and religious organizations contribute through day-care centers, free meals, medical camps, and shelters, particularly for destitute elders.

Public Support Systems:
Government initiatives play a complementary role. The National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), including the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS), offers financial aid to poor elderly. Healthcare schemes like Ayushman Bharat provide insurance and access to public health services. The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 legally enforces children’s responsibility toward aged parents. Concessions in travel and tax reliefs further support senior citizens.

Challenges and Support for Caregivers:
Caregivers, primarily family members, face significant emotional, physical, and financial burdens. Addressing these challenges requires a multi-pronged approach: establishing respite care centers to provide temporary relief, introducing counseling services and support groups, and offering financial incentives or tax breaks to reduce economic strain. Training caregivers in geriatric and palliative care can enhance the quality of support. Public awareness campaigns can sensitize society to elder care issues, while flexible workplace policies can help employees balance work with caregiving duties.

In sum, while families remain the bedrock of elder care in India, strengthening public programs, community support, and caregiver assistance is essential to meet the growing needs of an ageing population.
