UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

While many movements contributed significantly, the 19th-century social reform movement spearheaded by figures like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, and later, the women's suffrage movements, collectively played the most effective role in uplifting women's status. Their campaigns directly challenged deeply entrenched practices that severely curtailed women's lives. Raja Ram Mohan Roy's fight against Sati, and Vidyasagar's tireless advocacy for widow remarriage, directly addressed existential threats and offered second chances. Later movements pushed for women's education and political rights, which were fundamental for empowerment. These movements weren't just about charity; they created legal and social pathways for women to gain agency, education, and a voice, fundamentally altering societal norms and setting the stage for future progress.
