Quality control and grading of carpet wool.

UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Quality control and grading of carpet wool ensure suitability for rugs and carpets, where resilience, durability, and bulk are valued over fineness.

Key Parameters:

  • Fiber Diameter: Coarser than apparel wool, usually >30 microns, giving stiffness and resilience.

  • Staple Length: Ideally 7–15 cm for strong, spinnable yarn.

  • Medullation: Common in carpet wool; adds bulk and insulation, though excessive medullation hampers dyeing.

  • Crimp: Provides resilience and bulk, though less critical than in fine wool.

  • Strength: High tensile strength ensures durability.

  • Color: White or off-white is preferred for dye versatility; colored fibers are discounted.

  • Vegetable Matter: Low content is desirable to reduce processing costs.

  • Clean Wool Yield: Percentage of pure wool post-washing, affecting economic value.

Grading: Skilled sorters visually and tactually assess wool, sorting into grades by coarseness, length, and soundness. Coarser, highly medullated wool suits heavy-duty carpets, while finer grades serve softer rugs.
