UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

The "Osteodontokeratic culture" was a controversial hypothesis proposed by Raymond Dart in the mid-20th century, suggesting that early hominins, specifically Australopithecus africanus, systematically used bones, teeth, and horns (osteo-donto-keratic) as tools and weapons. Dart, working with fossil assemblages from Makapansgat in South Africa, interpreted fractured and worn animal remains as evidence of deliberate modification and use by these hominins. He envisioned Australopithecus as a formidable predator and hunter. While initially influential, this interpretation faced significant criticism. Later analyses by C.K. Brain demonstrated that many of the observed bone modifications could be attributed to natural processes, such as scavenging, carnivore activity, and bone accumulation in caves, rather than intentional hominin action. Today, the Osteodontokeratic culture is largely dismissed as a widespread technological phase, though the debate highlights early attempts to understand the cognitive and behavioral capabilities of our distant ancestors.
