UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Housing requirements for pregnant and milking cows vary to meet their physiological needs. Pregnant cows, especially in the dry period, require clean, dry, and spacious housing to ensure comfort and prepare for calving. Group dry cow pens or individual calving pens are preferred, equipped with deep, clean bedding such as straw or sawdust to reduce mastitis and post-calving infections. Adequate ventilation, access to fresh water, and balanced feed are essential. Calving pens must be hygienic, easily cleanable, and large enough for natural calving while allowing close observation. Milking cows need housing that balances comfort, hygiene, and milking efficiency. Freestall barns provide individual resting stalls with bedding (sand, mats) and free access to feed and water, while tie-stall barns allow closer individual care but restrict movement. Non-slip flooring, good ventilation, and cooling systems help reduce stress and injuries. Properly designed facilities must ensure smooth cow flow to the milking parlor and maintain strict hygiene.
