Question

Neo-classical organisation theory emphasises on which one of the following?

This question was previously asked in
UGC NET 2016 Paper 2 Management Question Paper (22-Jan-2017)
The correct answer is

Flat structure of organisation

Classical organisation theory treated the organisation as a machine and stressed structure, rules, hierarchy and command. Neo-classical organisation theory grew out of the human-relations movement (the Hawthorne studies) as a reaction to that mechanical view, and it put people, informal groups, communication, motivation and participation at the centre.

Because the neo-classical school wants closer contact between managers and workers, greater involvement and more delegation, it favours a flat structure - one with wider spans of control and shorter chains of command, so that communication flows quickly and workers feel more responsible.

A tall structure (many levels), coordination achieved through the hierarchy, and strict unity of command are all prescriptions of classical theory - the very features the neo-classical writers wanted to soften.

Hence neo-classical theory emphasises a flat structure of organisation.
