UGC NET 2021 Exam Pattern (Paper Wise Pattern), Marking Scheme, Syllabus & Books

UGC NET is a national level exam conducted by NTA on behalf of the University Grants Commission to certify the eligibility of candidates for the post of ‘Assistant Professor’ or ‘Junior Research Fellowship’. The UGC NET Exam Pattern 2021 will be published along with the release of notifications. UGC NET comprises two papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2 which will be held consecutively without any break. The total duration of the exam is 3 hours. Candidates are free to devote any amount of time to any paper. Paper 1 and Paper 2 will have 50 and 100 multiple choice questions respectively. Each correct answer will award you 2 marks. There will be no negative marking in the exam. The syllabus for Paper 1 and all 81 NET subjects of Paper 2 have been revised in 2019 and for this year no changes are expected to be made in the syllabus. UGC NET Exam Pattern for Paper II

The exam pattern of paper II is based upon the subject, chosen by the aspirants. 

UGC NET: Mode of Exam

  • UGC NET will be conducted in Online mode.
  • Each candidate will be allocated a desktop with a pre-installed software at the exam centre specially created for the examination.
  • Make sure to check that the system and the mouse is working properly before the exam commences. 

Nature of Questions in UGC NET Exam

  • The questions in both the papers will be objective in nature.
  • This means all the questions in UGC NET June 2021 will be of Multiple Choice type (MCQs).
  • The question will have 4 options, candidates must select the most appropriate answer.

Total Number of Questions in UGC NET 2021

  • UGC NET 2021 will have a total of 150 multiple-choice questions.
  • Paper 1 will have 50 questions and Paper 2 will have 100 questions.
  • There is No Restriction to move to and fro among the Papers.
  • All the questions are compulsory to attempt.

UGC NET Marking Scheme 2021

NET Marking Scheme

  • A uniform marking scheme is followed in the exam i.e. for both Paper 1 and 2, each correct answer will fetch you 2 marks.
  • As per the revised exam pattern of UGC NET exam, there is no negative marking for incorrect answer.
  • Hence, instead of skipping a question, one can use their calculated guess and mark the answer. 

The updated marking scheme of UGC NET is given below:

Note: If a question for any reason is found to be incorrect, the benefit of marks will be given to only those candidates who attempted the question. However, if NTA drops a question, the benefit will be given to all the candidates.

Ques: Is there any negative marking in the exam and what is the total time duration of the exam?

Ans: No. There is no negative in the exam. UGC NET 2021 will have a total of 150 multiple-choice questions and candidates will be given 3 hours to complete the exam. Paper 1 will have 50 questions and Paper 2 will have 100 questions. There is no Restriction to move to and fro among the Papers. All the questions are compulsory to attempt.

Ans: The updated marking scheme of UGC NET is given below:

Ques: Is there any sectional time limit in UGC NET 2021? 

Ans: No. There is no sectional time limit. Candidates can move to and fro among any sections of both papers. Paper 1 is going to be the same for every candidate and paper 2 is subject-specific which is specially designed to test the in-depth knowledge of candidates. Paper will have a total of 150 multiple choice questions and candidates will be given 2 marks for every correct answer, no negative marking will be there.

Ques: What are the major topics for paper 1 of UGC NET?

Ans: Paper 1 is the same and compulsory for every candidate. It will have a total of 50 multiple choice questions, 5 each from the following 10 topics:

Ans: Candidates have to follow the syllabus provided by NTA to prepare for the exam. Paper 2 is conducted for 81 subjects. Candidates can select the subject for paper 2 that is similar or related to their post-graduation subjects. It will have 100 MCQs only on the stream chosen by the candidate. All the questions of Paper 2 will be compulsory. Hi. MPhil is 'Master of Philosophy' and PhD means 'Doctor of Philosophy'. Both the degrees are based on research and course work but a PhD has a higher degree over MPhil. Through a PhD, a candidate can teach in universities and the education line as well.

Hi. Your only criterion to choose your subject should be your area of interest. If you're doing something that you're interested in, you won't have to worry about the difficulty of such exams. Having said that, in my knowledge I've heard that geography students find it very easy to clear NET.

Hi Neha. Yes, you must have obtained of minimum of 95 and above (includes all subjects mentioned in the marksheet) for the courses other than regular B.Com. For B.Com you need a minimum of 87%. Also, there is a reservation for Gujarati linguistic minority, you can refer to the official website for the same.

Hi Bhagyashri. At the university level, one need to clear CSIR-UGC NET exam along with having a PhD degree to get considered for teaching job. However, while teaching in schools, you must have a B. Ed degree.

Hi Puja. One of the main differences between the CSIR NET Exam and UGC NET Exam is the number of subjects the exam is conducted in. The CSIR NET exam is taken in 5 subjects while the UGC NET is taken for 84 different subjects other than science stream.

Hi Riyaz. To qualify for UGC NET JRF and Lectureship, it is mandatory for the candidates to get a minimum of 40% aggregate marks in both the papers combined for the general category (minimum 35% marks for reserved category candidates).

CSIR UGC NET Exam is held for chemical sciences, earth atmospheric ocean, and planetary science, life science, mathematical sciences, and physical sciences whereas CBSE UGC NET consists of 81 subjects. The candidates can choose on of the subjects in which he has passed Master’s Degree for this exam. So, Both Exams are different from each other.

Hi Arathy, UGC NET is conducted twice in a year, one in June and second in December. For June session, probably application will be released in February 2021 and exam date will be 2nd week of June 2021 tentatively.
