BPSC 70th 2024 Prelims General Studies Re-Exam Question Paper (04-Jan-2025)
The correct answer is

More than one of the above

Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw the bombs together, so the answer is “more than one of the above” — option 4.

What happened. On 8 April 1929, as the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi was about to pass the Public Safety Bill and the Trade Disputes Bill, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association threw two low-intensity bombs into an empty part of the chamber, scattered leaflets, and shouted Inquilab Zindabad. They then deliberately allowed themselves to be arrested.

PointDetail
Date8 April 1929
WhoBhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt
PurposeTo make the deaf hear” — the phrase from their leaflet, borrowed from the French anarchist Vaillant
BombsDeliberately weak, thrown where no one was sitting; the intention was noise, not injury
ArrestVoluntary — a trial was what they wanted

Why they wanted to be caught. The trial gave them a national platform. Bhagat Singh used the courtroom to argue his politics, and the hunger strike he and his comrades began in jail, demanding treatment as political prisoners rather than as ordinary criminals, held the country’s attention for months.

Where Jatin Das comes in. Option 1 is not a random name. Jatindra Nath Das was a comrade in the same case who joined that hunger strike in Lahore jail and died on 13 September 1929 after 63 days of fasting. His funeral procession was enormous, and his death did more than anything else to bring the prisoners’ cause before the public. But he was not one of the two who threw the bombs.

What followed. Bhagat Singh was subsequently tried in the Lahore Conspiracy Case for the killing of the police officer Saunders, and was hanged with Rajguru and Sukhdev on 23 March 1931. Batukeshwar Dutt was transported for life to the Andamans and lived until 1965.

Hence, the answer is More than one of the above.
