Question

Which of the following Green House Gases has no natural source?

This question was previously asked in
UGC NET 2023 Electronic Science Question Paper (13-Dec-2023) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

Halocarbons

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, and most of them have both natural and human (anthropogenic) sources.
Carbon dioxide has significant natural sources, such as respiration by living organisms, volcanic eruptions, and natural decomposition of organic matter, in addition to human sources like the burning of fossil fuels.
Methane has natural sources such as wetlands, termites, and natural gas seepage, in addition to human sources like livestock farming, rice paddies, and landfills.
Nitrous oxide has natural sources including soil bacteria (through nitrification and denitrification processes) and oceans, in addition to human sources like fertilizer use and various industrial processes.
Halocarbons, such as CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), HFCs, and related compounds, on the other hand, are entirely synthetic, man-made industrial chemicals. They do not occur naturally in the environment at all - they were specifically manufactured for use as refrigerants, aerosol propellants, and industrial solvents, so their entire presence in the atmosphere is due to human activity.
Therefore, the greenhouse gas with no natural source is Halocarbons.
