The burgeoning strategic partnership between India and the United States, while marked by increasing convergence, often encounters friction because Washington frequently struggles to fully position India in a manner that satisfies its national self-esteem and geopolitical ambitions. India views itself not merely as a balancing force against China – a common US strategic perception – but as an independent, rising major power with strategic autonomy, aiming to be a net security provider and a leading voice in a multi-polar world.

India's self-esteem demands recognition as a peer, not a junior partner. This dissonance manifests in several ways. For example, India's continued procurement of military hardware from Russia, including the S-400 missile system, despite potential CAATSA sanctions, underscores its commitment to diversifying its defence procurement and asserting its strategic choices, rather than fully aligning with US dictates. Earlier hesitations from the US side to transfer cutting-edge dual-use technologies, such as advanced jet engine co-development, without significant conditions or until very recently, also reflected a perceived asymmetry in trust and partnership that chafed India’s ambitions.

Furthermore, while the US rhetorically supports India's bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council, the tangible diplomatic push often appears insufficient for India, which sees this as a critical marker of its global great power status. This underlying challenge – where the US sees India as a crucial partner within its strategic framework, while India aspires to be an independent co-architect of the global order – introduces intermittent friction, even amidst growing collaboration on various fronts.
