A Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is a passive, non-emissive device: it does not generate light of its own but instead acts as a controllable optical shutter that either passes or blocks light coming from a backlight (or ambient light in reflective displays).

The construction, layer by layer, explains why:

  • The liquid crystal (LC) layer is sandwiched between two glass plates that carry thin, transparent conducting electrodes (typically indium tin oxide).
  • On the outer faces of the glass are two polarizers, usually oriented at 90° to each other. Light from the backlight is first linearly polarized by the rear polarizer.
  • In the common twisted-nematic type, the LC molecules are aligned so that, with no voltage applied, they twist the plane of polarization by 90°, letting the light pass through the second polarizer — the segment appears bright.
  • When a voltage is applied across the electrodes, the LC molecules realign along the electric field and stop twisting the light. The light is then blocked by the second polarizer and the segment appears dark.

The idea that the layer acts as a light source is wrong because the LC material only redirects the polarization of existing light; the illumination comes from a separate backlight or reflected ambient light.
