The correct answer is

a dual converter

a dual converter option is correct.

Running a dc shunt motor at variable speed in both directions with regenerative braking in both directions is a four-quadrant operation. A dual converter, consisting of two fully controlled bridges connected in anti-parallel, can deliver motoring and regenerating current of either polarity, giving all four operating quadrants without mechanical reversal.

A half-controlled bridge cannot regenerate (no negative output voltage). A single fully controlled bridge can invert but cannot reverse current polarity, so it only reaches two quadrants. A diode bridge is uncontrolled and gives only unidirectional operation.
