In the I-V curve of a solar cell, what does the open-circuit voltage (Voc) represent ?
The maximum voltage the cell can generate under illumination
The maximum voltage the cell can generate under illumination option is correct.
The open-circuit voltage \(V_{oc}\) of a solar cell is the terminal voltage measured when no current is drawn (external load an open circuit). Under illumination the photo-generated current \(I_L\) forward-biases the p–n junction until the diode injection current exactly cancels the light-generated current, and no net current flows.
Setting the net current to zero in the ideal one-diode model gives \(V_{oc} = \dfrac{nkT}{q}\ln\left(\dfrac{I_L}{I_0}+1\right)\), which is the largest voltage the cell can develop under a given illumination because any current drawn from the cell reduces the terminal voltage.
In the dark \(I_L=0\) so \(V_{oc}=0\). At the maximum-power point the voltage \(V_{mp}\) is strictly less than \(V_{oc}\) because both current and voltage are non-zero there. Zero-current does describe \(V_{oc}\), but the primary physical significance is that it is the maximum available voltage under light.
