The correct answer is

By altering the liquid crystal alignment

By altering the liquid crystal alignment option is correct.

An LCD pixel is a sandwich of two crossed polarisers with a thin layer of nematic liquid crystal between them. In the off state the liquid-crystal molecules are twisted (typically 90° in a TN cell) and rotate the polarisation of the backlight so that it passes through the second polariser and the pixel appears bright.

When a voltage is applied across the transparent ITO electrodes of the pixel, the liquid-crystal directors realign along the electric field, the polarisation rotation is destroyed and the analyser blocks the light, so the pixel darkens. Grey levels are produced by graded intermediate alignments.

Colour is then created by placing fixed red, green and blue sub-pixel colour filters over the modulated white backlight; the filters only select wavelength, whereas it is the liquid-crystal alignment that actually controls how much light passes through each sub-pixel. Pixel size and backlight intensity are not per-pixel controls in a conventional LCD panel.
