In the semiconductors, what is the role of a doping ?
It introduces impurities to modify the electrical properties of the material
It introduces impurities to modify the electrical properties of the material option is correct.
Doping is the intentional introduction of small, controlled quantities of impurity atoms (dopants) into an otherwise pure (intrinsic) semiconductor crystal such as silicon or germanium. Pentavalent atoms like phosphorus or arsenic donate free electrons and produce an n-type material, while trivalent atoms like boron or gallium create holes and give p-type material.
By setting the dopant concentration the designer directly fixes the majority-carrier density, conductivity, Fermi-level position and the built-in potential of any junction formed with the doped region, which is how transistors, diodes and integrated circuits are engineered.
Doping does not widen the bandgap (the bandgap is a property of the host lattice and actually shrinks slightly at very heavy doping), nor does it improve thermal conductivity. Resistivity does fall, but that is only one consequence of the more fundamental change in electrical properties, so the broader statement is the precise description of the role of doping.
