The paper sequence and duration remain important while practising CDS question papers because candidates appearing for IMA, INA and AFA have to manage three separate two-hour papers on the same examination day. OTA candidates have a shorter written schedule because Elementary Mathematics is not part of their examination.
| Paper | CDS 1 2026 | CDS 2 2026 | Applicable To |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | Apr 12, 2026 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM |
Sep 13, 2026 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM |
IMA, INA, AFA and OTA |
| General Knowledge | Apr 12, 2026 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM |
Sep 13, 2026 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM |
IMA, INA, AFA and OTA |
| Elementary Mathematics | Apr 12, 2026 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM |
Sep 13, 2026 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM |
IMA, INA and AFA only |
Candidates seeking admission to the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy or Air Force Academy have to appear for all three written papers. English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics carry 100 marks each, making the written examination worth 300 marks. Each paper has a duration of two hours and consists of objective-type questions.
| Subject | Duration | Maximum Marks |
|---|---|---|
| English | 2 Hours | 100 |
| General Knowledge | 2 Hours | 100 |
| Elementary Mathematics | 2 Hours | 100 |
| Total | 6 Hours | 300 Marks |
Candidates applying for the Officers' Training Academy have a different written examination structure. OTA candidates are required to appear only for English and General Knowledge. Elementary Mathematics is not included in the OTA written examination. Therefore, the OTA written examination carries a total of 200 marks instead of 300 marks.
| Subject | Duration | Maximum Marks |
|---|---|---|
| English | 2 Hours | 100 |
| General Knowledge | 2 Hours | 100 |
| Total | 4 Hours | 200 Marks |
All CDS written papers are objective-type. There is negative marking for incorrect answers, making accuracy important while attempting both CDS 1 and CDS 2 papers. For every incorrect answer, one-third of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. No penalty is imposed for a question that is left unanswered. If more than one option is marked for a question, it is treated as an incorrect response.
The General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics question papers are provided bilingually in Hindi and English, while the English paper assesses the candidate's proficiency in English. The standard of Elementary Mathematics is approximately matriculation level, whereas the standard expected in the other papers is broadly at graduate level.
With CDS 2 2026 conducted, the CDS 1 papers remain useful for comparing the two examination sessions because they provide the other complete UPSC paper set from the same examination year. Candidates can attempt each paper in a two-hour timed environment before referring to the answer key or detailed solution.
CDS 1 and CDS 2 are separate examination sessions, but the written examination scheme remains comparable. With CDS 2 2026 conducted, candidates can compare both sets of papers subject-wise. This can help identify whether the distribution of topics, calculation load, factual depth and overall question framing changed between the April and September sessions.
However, candidates should not assume that questions appearing in CDS 1 will necessarily be repeated in CDS 2. Previous papers are best used to understand the type and standard of questions, recurring syllabus areas and the amount of time required to solve the paper rather than as a source for predicting exact questions.
The CDS answer keys help candidates evaluate their responses after completing the paper. For CDS 1 2026, candidates can access the paper-wise answer key and detailed solution links provided above. Detailed solutions are particularly useful for Mathematics and concept-based GK questions because they explain how the correct answer is reached instead of providing only an option number.
For CDS 2 2026, question papers and corresponding answer-key resources are available after the September 13 examination. Candidates should distinguish between answer keys provided for immediate exam analysis and any official answer-key documents subsequently published by UPSC. Wherever UPSC releases an official document, it should be treated as the authoritative reference.
Candidates who qualify the written examination are shortlisted for the Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview. The written and SSB stages carry different totals depending on the academy. For IMA, INA and AFA, the written examination carries 300 marks and the SSB stage also carries 300 marks. For OTA, the written examination carries 200 marks and the SSB carries 200 marks.
Therefore, downloading the question paper and estimating the written score is useful for assessing performance, but clearing the written examination alone does not complete the selection process. Candidates must also satisfy the applicable SSB and medical requirements before final selection and academy allocation.

However, both sessions follow the same academy-wise paper structure, making the papers useful for subject-wise comparison and future CDS preparation.
Ques: Which CDS 2026 question papers should an OTA candidate download?
Ans: Candidates appearing only for the Officers' Training Academy should primarily download and practise the English and General Knowledge papers. OTA candidates do not appear for the Elementary Mathematics paper. Candidates who have also applied for IMA, INA or AFA, depending on their eligibility and preferences, should prepare according to the papers applicable to those academies.
Ques: Is the CDS 2 2026 question paper available after the September 13 examination?
Ans: Yes. CDS 2 2026 was conducted on September 13, 2026, and the paper-wise question paper and answer key resources are available through the links provided above. Candidates can download the relevant English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics papers according to their academy requirements.
