AFCAT 2021 was conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in two sessions, AFCAT 1 from 20 to 22 February 2021 and AFCAT 2 from 28 to 30 August 2021, for entry into the Flying and Ground Duty branches. Candidates can download the AFCAT 2021 question paper with answer key in PDF below to study an older, well documented session of the AFCAT exam.
The table below lays out both AFCAT 2021 sessions in full, including the exact shift timings candidates sat the exam in.

AFCAT 2021 followed the same base structure the AFCAT exam pattern still uses. Score an old paper with these rules to get a realistic practice result.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Question Type | Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) |
| Total Questions | 100 |
| Total Marks | 300 |
| Duration | 120 minutes |
| Medium | English |
| Marking Scheme | +3 for correct, -1 for wrong, 0 for unattempted |
Unlike some later AFCAT cycles that split questions evenly, AFCAT 2021 gave Reasoning and Military Aptitude the largest share of the paper by a wide margin.
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Awareness | 25 | 75 |
| Verbal Ability in English | 25 | 75 |
| Numerical Ability | 18 | 54 |
| Reasoning and Military Aptitude | 32 | 96 |
| Total | 100 | 300 |
Candidates across all three February days rated the paper easy to moderate overall, with Numerical Ability the most manageable section of the three days.
| Section | Difficulty | Key Observation |
|---|---|---|
| General Awareness | Moderate | Mix of static GK and early 2021 current affairs |
| Verbal Ability in English | Easy to Moderate | Synonyms, antonyms and cloze test were common |
| Numerical Ability | Easy to Moderate | Shortest section, mostly formula based |
| Reasoning and Military Aptitude | Moderate to Tough | Largest section, a few time-consuming sets |
The August session came in moderate overall, with General Awareness and Reasoning slightly easier than Verbal Ability and Numerical Ability across the three days.
| Section | Difficulty | Key Observation |
|---|---|---|
| General Awareness | Easy to Moderate | Mostly static GK based questions |
| Verbal Ability in English | Moderate | Grammar and vocabulary heavy |
| Numerical Ability | Moderate | A few calculation-heavy questions each shift |
| Reasoning and Military Aptitude | Easy to Moderate | Consistently rated among the easier sections |
Ground Duty Technical candidates in 2021 sat a second paper, the Engineering Knowledge Test, right after the main AFCAT paper on the same day. It is a separate test with its own timing and subjects, not an extension of the AFCAT paper.
| Parameter | AFCAT 2021 Paper | EKT 2021 Paper |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 100 | 50 |
| Marks | 300 | 150 |
| Duration | 120 minutes | 45 minutes |
| Who Takes It | All AFCAT candidates | Ground Duty Technical candidates only |
| Subjects | GA, English, Numerical, Reasoning | Mechanical, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics |
These topics are chosen from what candidates actually recalled after each 2021 shift, not the general AFCAT syllabus.
| Section | Topics Asked |
|---|---|
| General Awareness | History, geography, politics, sports, books and authors, currencies, current affairs |
| Verbal Ability in English | Synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases, cloze test, error detection, reading comprehension |
| Numerical Ability | Time and work, time and distance, simple interest, profit and loss, simplification |
| Reasoning and Military Aptitude | Venn diagrams, analogy, pattern completion, coding-decoding, classification, letter series and codes |
Vacancy count is one of the first things candidates check when comparing an old AFCAT cycle to the current one, since it shows how competitive that particular session actually was.
| Session | Vacancies Announced |
|---|---|
| AFCAT 1 2021 | 241 (initially notified as 235), across Flying and Ground Duty branches |
| AFCAT 2 2021 | 334, across AFCAT Entry, NCC Special Entry and Meteorology Entry |
A few standout questions from the 2021 papers give a clearer sense of the paper's actual level than a topic list alone. Here are some candidates recalled from both sessions.
AFCAT 2021 paper used the same section split as 2020, and General Awareness included questions on real events like the Galwan Valley standoff and the Tokyo Olympics. Solving these AFCAT Memory Based papers helps you understand how much time each section needs and where you are likely to lose marks. This makes your practice more focused instead of just reading through topics. Once the papers feel comfortable, attempt a full length AFCAT mock test to hold that same pace across all four sections under a live timer, which is where most candidates find the marks they were leaking.

Ques: Was there more than one version of the AFCAT 2021 question paper within a single shift?
Ans: Yes. Since AFCAT is a computer based test, IAF draws each candidate's questions from a larger question bank, so candidates sitting the same shift did not necessarily see an identical paper, even though the section structure and marking stayed the same for everyone.
Ques: Why can't candidates directly compare their raw AFCAT 2021 score with someone from a different shift?
Ans: IAF normalizes scores across shifts to adjust for any difference in paper difficulty between one shift and another. So two candidates with the same raw score from different shifts may not have actually performed equally well relative to their own shift.
Ques: Was there a noticeable difficulty gap between the morning and afternoon shift on the same AFCAT 2021 exam day?
Ans: Candidate feedback did not point to a consistent gap between the two shifts on any single day in 2021. The bigger difference showed up between the February and August sessions, not between shifts on the same day.
Ques: Did AFCAT 2021 change anything compared to the previous AFCAT cycle?
Ans: No. The paper format, section split and marking scheme carried over unchanged from 2020, so candidates moving from a 2020 paper to a 2021 one would not have noticed any structural difference.
Ques: Can the AFCAT 2021 answer key on this page also be used to check EKT responses?
Ans: No. The answer key here covers only the 100 question AFCAT paper. The EKT is scored against a separate answer key released specifically for the Engineering Knowledge Test.
