AFCAT 2017 Question Paper and Answer Key; Download PDF

AFCAT 2017 holds a place in the exam's history it was the last cycle conducted in offline, OMR sheet mode before the AFCAT exam moved online from AFCAT 1 2018 onward. The Indian Air Force held AFCAT 1 2017 on February 26 and AFCAT 2 2017 on August 27, recruiting Class-I Gazetted Officers into the Flying and Ground Duty (Technical and Non-Technical) branches. Candidates can download the AFCAT 2017 question paper and answer key below to see how the paper looked in its final pen and paper year.

AFCAT 2017 Exam Mode and Pattern

Unlike the computer based test used today, AFCAT 2017 required candidates to mark their responses on an OMR answer sheet at the exam centre. The scoring formula itself, however, is nearly identical to what's used now.

Particulars Details
Exam Mode Offline, pen-and-paper (OMR sheet)
Question Type Objective (MCQ), 4 options per question
Medium English only
Total Questions 100
Total Marks 300
Duration 2 Hours (120 Minutes)
Marking Scheme +3 for correct answer, -1 for incorrect answer
Common Description Referred to as “one-third negative marking,” since the 1-mark penalty equals one-third of a 3-mark question

Go through the AFCAT exam pattern page for the full marking scheme, section split, and duration.

AFCAT 2017 EKT Pattern: Two-Part Test for the Technical Branch

The Engineering Knowledge Test in 2017 followed a two part structure that later years eventually simplified into a single combined paper. Ground Duty (Technical) applicants had to clear both parts to move ahead.

Particulars Details
Applicable For Ground Duty (Technical) branch aspirants only
Part A - General Engineering 40 questions
Part B - Specialist Paper (chosen discipline) 35 questions
Total Duration Approx. 1 Hour (both parts combined)
Qualifying Rule Candidates had to pass both Part A and Part B to qualify for the AFSB interview
Specialist Disciplines Offered Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Engineering

AFCAT 2017 Syllabus and Sections

AFCAT 1 & 2 2017 paper was split into the same four broad sections still used today, though the exact question-wise split per section for this offline cycle was never officially published. See the subject wise topics for each section on AFCAT syllabus.

Section What It Tested
General Awareness History, Geography, Environment, Culture, Current Affairs, Politics, Civics, Basic Science, Defence, Art
Verbal Ability in English Comprehension, Error Detection, Synonyms, Antonyms, Vocabulary, Sentence Completion
Numerical Ability Decimal Fraction, Simplification, Average, Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, Simple Interest, Profit & Loss
Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test Verbal Skills and Spatial Ability

AFCAT 2017 Exam Analysis: What Candidates Reported

Since AFCAT 2017 predates the shift wise numeric “good attempts” data published for later online cycles, feedback from that year is largely qualitative rather than a precise attempt count.

  • The English section was reported as tougher than in previous years, with most questions above average difficulty except the comprehension passage
  • The Numerical Ability (Maths) section was considered comparatively easier, with repeated questions from Time & Work, Speed & Distance, and Profit & Loss
  • Both shifts on each exam day used different question sets, so difficulty could vary slightly between the morning and afternoon papers
  • Overall, AFCAT 1 2017 was conducted smoothly with no reported paper leaks, unlike the issue flagged in the preceding AFCAT 2 2016 cycle

Even though its offline scoring and two part EKT don't match today's on screen exam, AFCAT 2017 is still a solid starting point for building subject-wise accuracy. Candidates can use these Memory Based Papers to strengthen English, General Awareness, and Reasoning fundamentals first, then move on to a full-length online AFCAT Mock Tests so the exam day experience matches the current computer-based format and time pressure.

AFCAT 2017 Question Paper FAQs

Ques: Does the Indian Air Force officially release the AFCAT 2017 question paper or answer key?

Ans: No. The IAF has never published an official question paper or answer key for AFCAT. What's available here is a reconstruction based on candidate recall from that year, useful for practice but not a verbatim official record.

Ques: Was the main AFCAT 2017 written paper common across Flying, Technical, and Non-Technical branch applicants?

Ans: Yes. The 100 question AFCAT paper was common to all branches; only candidates applying for the Ground Duty (Technical) branch additionally sat for the EKT.

Ques: Did both shifts of AFCAT 2 2017 also receive different question sets, like AFCAT 1 2017?

Ans: Records confirm different sets across the two AFCAT 1 2017 shifts, but an equally detailed shift-wise breakdown for AFCAT 2 2017 (Aug 27) isn't as clearly documented, so this can't be confirmed with the same certainty for that cycle.

Ques: How were AFCAT 2017 OMR answer sheets evaluated?

Ans: As with most offline era government exams of that period, the OMR sheet was machine-scanned to generate the raw score, with manual verification typically reserved for sheets with unclear or multiple markings.

Ques: Could candidates use the AFCAT 2017 question booklet itself for rough work?

Ans: Generally yes. Since scoring relied on a separate OMR sheet, candidates could use space in the question booklet for calculations and rough work, something not possible in the current on-screen format.

Ques: Was the AFCAT 2017 EKT score merged with the main AFCAT score?

Ans: No. The EKT was evaluated as a distinct qualifying component for the Ground Duty (Technical) branch and did not merge into the main 300-mark AFCAT score.
