Fate map of frog embryo

UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

A frog embryo’s fate map is a detailed blueprint showing which embryonic cells develop into specific tissues and organs. At the blastula stage, the embryo has three key regions: the animal polevegetal pole, and marginal zone. The animal pole, rich in cytoplasm, gives rise to ectoderm, forming the skin, neural tissue, and nervous system. The vegetal pole, containing abundant yolk, forms endoderm, which becomes the gut and associated organs. The marginal zone, lying between these poles, produces mesoderm, contributing to muscles, notochord, blood, and connective tissues.

During gastrulation, cells migrate through the blastopore, positioning themselves according to these fates. For example, cells from the dorsal marginal zone form the notochord, while ventral marginal zone cells contribute to blood vessels and other structures. Scientists track these movements using dyes or markers, revealing how coordinated cell migrations shape the embryo. The fate map provides a crucial understanding of vertebrate development, showing how early cellular positions predict later tissue and organ formation, and offering insights into developmental biology and patterning mechanisms.
