Lampbrush chromosomes, observed in the oocytes of amphibians and birds during the prolonged diplotene stage of meiosis, are remarkable for their size and transcriptional activity. Morphologically, they resemble a brush, with a central axis of condensed chromatin from which numerous lateral loops extend like the bristles of a lampbrush. These lateral loops consist of decondensed chromatin where genes are actively transcribed, producing RNA that associates with proteins, forming a visible, fuzzy matrix. In contrast, the central axis contains chromomeres, regions of tightly packed, transcriptionally inactive DNA. The primary function of lampbrush chromosomes is the massive synthesis of maternal mRNAs and proteins, which are stored in the oocyte to support early embryonic development before the zygotic genome becomes active. Their large size and distinct morphology make them an excellent model for studying gene transcription, chromatin organization, and regulatory mechanisms. As meiosis progresses, the lateral loops retract, but the essential maternal reserves they produce underscore their crucial role in oocyte maturation and developmental readiness.
