Question

Read the following passage and answer the questions given after it.

At the end of 2020, there were 82.4 million forcibly displaced people in the world, of which more than a quarter are refugees.

"By the end of 2020, the number of people forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations, and events seriously disturbing public order, had grown to 82.4 million, the highest number on record according to available data," according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Out of these 82.4 million forcibly displaced people in the world, more than a quarter are refugees.

Just five countries produce 68% of all refugees displaced abroad: the Syrian Arab Republic, Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Myanmar.

The top five host countries, where these displaced people are currently located are: Turkey, Colombia, Germany, Pakistan, and Uganda.

With 3.7 million displaced people now within its borders, Turkey hosts twice as many refugees as Colombia, the next highest host country, with 1.7 million people. The situation in Turkey illustrates the effects of proximity, as 92% of its refugees have come from neighbouring Syria, where war and armed conflict have now been raging for more than 10 years. It demonstrates that huge numbers of displaced people stay close to their point of origin.

There are more than 48 million internally displaced people - people who have had to flee their homes in search of safety elsewhere within their home nation.

The highest increases in the number of internally displaced people happened in Africa (especially Ethiopia) and were provoked by a combination of armed conflict and humanitarian disasters. Civil war in Ethiopia, Africa's second most-populated country, has sparked a wave of displacement in a region that was already facing what the UNHCR calls "a full-scale humanitarian crisis."

All in all, more than a million Ethiopian people had to leave their homes behind last year, the UNHCR says.

The correct answer is Turkey is the nearest hospitable country to Syria.

Analyzing Refugee Displacement and Host Countries

The question asks for the main reason why Syrian refugees prefer to take shelter in Turkey, based on the provided passage. To answer this, we need to carefully read the passage and identify the information related to Syrian refugees and their location in Turkey.

Understanding the Passage on Displaced People

The passage discusses the global issue of forcibly displaced people, including refugees and internally displaced people. It highlights key statistics for 2020, the main countries producing refugees, and the top host countries.

Specifically, the passage states:

  • "The top five host countries, where these displaced people are currently located are: Turkey, Colombia, Germany, Pakistan, and Uganda."
  • "With 3.7 million displaced people now within its borders, Turkey hosts twice as many refugees as Colombia..."
  • "The situation in Turkey illustrates the effects of proximity, as 92% of its refugees have come from neighbouring Syria, where war and armed conflict have now been raging for more than 10 years."
  • "It demonstrates that huge numbers of displaced people stay close to their point of origin."

These sentences directly address why a large number of Syrian refugees are in Turkey.

Evaluating the Given Options

Let's examine each option in light of the information provided in the passage:

  • Option 1: Turkey is a beautiful country.
The passage does not mention anything about Turkey's beauty. Therefore, this is not the reason given in the text.
  • Option 2: Turkey is the nearest hospitable country to Syria.
The passage explicitly states that Turkey is a "neighbouring Syria" and that the situation in Turkey "illustrates the effects of proximity". It also notes that 92% of Turkey's refugees are from Syria and that "huge numbers of displaced people stay close to their point of origin." While the term "hospitable" isn't used to describe Turkey, the fact that it hosts 3.7 million displaced people (mostly from Syria) implies a level of hospitality or at least accessibility for refugees seeking shelter. The passage strongly emphasizes Turkey's proximity to Syria as the key factor explaining the large number of Syrian refugees choosing it as a destination. Combining proximity ("nearest") with the necessity of being a host country ("hospitable") aligns well with the passage's emphasis on staying close to the point of origin due to proximity.
  • Option 3: Turkey is a hospitable country.
As mentioned, while hosting millions implies hospitality, the passage specifically points to proximity as the main explanation for the large number of Syrian refugees there. This option doesn't capture the primary reason highlighted in the text as effectively as Option 2, which includes the crucial element of being "nearest".
  • Option 4: Turkey provides the refugees with all amenities.
The passage does not provide any information about the amenities or services provided by Turkey to refugees. Therefore, this cannot be concluded from the text.

Conclusion Based on Passage Analysis

Based on the passage, the most significant factor explaining why Syrian refugees are predominantly in Turkey is its geographical proximity to Syria. The passage emphasizes that displaced people often stay close to their point of origin and uses Turkey as an example of how proximity influences displacement patterns, noting that 92% of the refugees in Turkey are from neighbouring Syria.

Option 2, "Turkey is the nearest hospitable country to Syria," best reflects the passage's explanation by combining the elements of proximity ("nearest") and the necessity of being able to host refugees ("hospitable"). The passage strongly supports the idea that proximity is the main driver for the large numbers.

Reason Supported by Passage? Explanation from Passage
Beautiful country No Not mentioned.
Nearest hospitable country to Syria Yes "neighbouring Syria", "effects of proximity", "huge numbers... stay close to their point of origin". Hosting implies hospitality.
Hospitable country Partially, but not main reason given Hosting implies hospitality, but proximity is highlighted as the primary driver for the large numbers from Syria.
Provides all amenities No Not mentioned.

Revision Table: Understanding Refugee Displacement Factors

Here's a quick summary of key terms related to displacement from the passage:

Term Definition/Context in Passage
Forcibly displaced people People who fled due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations, etc. (82.4 million globally in 2020).
Refugees A subset of forcibly displaced people who have crossed an international border.
Internally displaced people (IDPs) People who fled their homes but remain within their home country.
Proximity Closeness; highlighted as a key factor influencing where displaced people from Syria seek shelter.
Host Country A country that provides shelter and aid to refugees or displaced people.

Additional Information: Global Refugee Crisis

The passage provides a snapshot of the global displacement crisis at the end of 2020. It highlights several important aspects:

  • The sheer scale of displacement: 82.4 million people is a massive number.
  • The main drivers of displacement: Conflict, violence, persecution, human rights violations, and public disorder.
  • Concentration of origin: A small number of countries produce the majority of refugees.
  • Concentration of hosting: A small number of countries host the majority of refugees.
  • The importance of geography: Proximity plays a significant role in determining where displaced people go, as seen with Syrian refugees and Turkey.
  • The scale of internal displacement: More than 48 million people were displaced within their own countries, often due to conflict and humanitarian disasters, as exemplified by Ethiopia.

Understanding these factors is crucial for comprehending the complexities of global migration and displacement crises.
