Why Russia looks like a member. It was one, for seventeen years. The group began as the G6 in 1975 — a response to the oil shock and the collapse of the Bretton Woods system — became the G7 when Canada joined in 1976, and became the G8 when Russia was admitted in 1997. It was suspended in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea, and the group reverted to the G7. Russia formally withdrew in 2017.

What the G7 is. An informal grouping of large advanced economies with no charter, no treaty and no permanent secretariat. The presidency rotates annually and the host sets the agenda; its declarations are political commitments, not law. India is not a member but has been invited to recent summits as a guest.
Do not confuse it with the G20, which includes both advanced and emerging economies — India, China, Brazil, Russia, South Africa and others, together with the African Union — and which India chaired in 2023, hosting the New Delhi summit.
