About the grouping. The acronym BRIC was coined by the economist Jim O’Neill in 2001; the countries began meeting formally in 2009, and South Africa joined in 2010 to make BRICS. From 1 January 2024 the membership was enlarged by Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates; Saudi Arabia was invited and has participated without formally confirming membership, and Argentina declined after a change of government.
