The correct answer is

Pennsylvania

The attempt took place at Butler in the state of Pennsylvania — option 1.

What happened. On 13 July 2024, during an open-air campaign rally at the Butler Farm Show grounds in Butler, Pennsylvania, shots were fired from the roof of a nearby building. Donald Trump, then the presumptive Republican nominee for President, was wounded in the ear. One member of the audience, a volunteer firefighter named Corey Comperatore, was killed and two others were seriously injured. The gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, aged twenty, was shot dead at the scene by a Secret Service counter-sniper.

Why Milwaukee is the closest distractor. The Republican National Convention opened at Milwaukee, in Wisconsin, on 15 July 2024 — just two days after the shooting — and Trump appeared there with his ear bandaged and was formally nominated. The two places are constantly mentioned together in accounts of that week, but the rally itself was in Pennsylvania.

The wider context. Pennsylvania was one of the most closely contested “swing states” of the 2024 election, which is why a rally was being held there in the first place. Trump went on to win the presidential election held on 5 November 2024. The failure of security at Butler led to Congressional inquiries and to the resignation of the head of the Secret Service.

Hence, the answer is Pennsylvania.
