The correct answer is

Iran

Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran, the capital of Iran — option 3.

What happened. Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of Hamas, had travelled to Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran’s new President, Masoud Pezeshkian. In the early hours of 31 July 2024 he was killed in the guest house where he was staying, along with a bodyguard. Iran and Hamas both blamed Israel, which did not claim the operation. He was living in exile in Qatar at the time and had led the Hamas political bureau since 2017, having earlier served as Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority after the 2006 elections.

PointDetail
Date31 July 2024
PlaceTehran, Iran
OccasionInauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian
Position heldChairman of the Hamas political bureau since 2017
SuccessorYahya Sinwar, named in August 2024

Why the location mattered so much. A killing on Iranian soil, during a state occasion attended by foreign dignitaries, was read across the region as a direct humiliation of Iran’s security apparatus, and it sharply raised the risk of a wider war. It came within a day of an Israeli strike in Beirut that killed the Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr — which is why Lebanon appears as the first option and is the strongest distractor in this question.

The other options. Palestine is where Hamas is based and where the Gaza war was being fought, but Haniyeh had lived abroad for years. Jordan has no connection with the event.

Hence, the answer is Iran.
