Question

Which method is most suitable for obtaining pure crystals of copper sulfate from its solution?

The correct answer is

Crystallization

Crystallisation is a method of obtaining a pure solid in the form of crystals from its solution. The solution is heated to make it saturated, filtered if needed, and then allowed to cool slowly so that pure crystals separate out.

Impurities remain dissolved in the leftover solution, so the crystals obtained are pure. Simple evaporation to dryness is avoided because the blue copper sulfate crystals contain water of crystallisation, which strong heating would drive off, and soluble impurities would also be left behind.

Distillation is used to recover a pure liquid from a solution, filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid, and sublimation separates solids such as ammonium chloride, camphor or iodine that change directly into vapour, which copper sulfate does not.

Hence, Crystallization.
