Question

Which method is commonly used to separate particles from a heterogeneous mixture after coagulation has taken place?

The correct answer is

Filtration

Coagulation is the process in which very fine suspended particles, which would otherwise stay dispersed, are made to clump together into larger particles (flocs), for example by adding alum to muddy water. Once the particles are coagulated, the mixture is a heterogeneous mixture of a liquid and solid lumps.

Filtration passes this mixture through a porous medium such as filter paper or a sand bed. The liquid passes through, while the coagulated particles, now too large to pass the pores, are held back. In this way the solid particles are separated completely from the liquid; this is why, in water treatment, coagulation and settling are followed by filtration.

Decantation can pour off the clearer liquid after the flocs settle, but light flocs and fine particles left in suspension are not fully removed, so filtration is the method that separates the coagulated particles completely.

Distillation and evaporation work by boiling off or vaporising a liquid; they are used to separate dissolved substances or liquids with different boiling points, not to remove suspended solid particles from a mixture.

Hence, Filtration.
