Which method is commonly used to separate a mixture of two miscible liquids with different boiling points?
Distillation
Miscible liquids mix completely with each other and form a single layer, so they cannot be separated by simply pouring off or using a separating funnel. The difference in their boiling points has to be used instead.
In distillation, the mixture is heated; the liquid with the lower boiling point vaporises first, and its vapour is cooled in a condenser and collected separately. Simple distillation works when the boiling points differ widely, as for acetone and water, while fractional distillation is used when the boiling points are close.
Chromatography separates dissolved substances such as dyes in small amounts, while filtration and sedimentation separate insoluble solids from liquids. None of these uses a difference in boiling points to separate two miscible liquids.
Hence, Distillation.
