The correct answer is

4 and 0

Step 1 – Divisibility by 5: last digit must be 0 or 5, so $ = 0 or 5.

Step 2 – Divisibility by 8: last three digits $4*$ must form a multiple of 8. Try $ = 0: last three digits become 4*0. For * = 4 this is 440, and \(440 \div 8 = 55\) — divisible.

Step 3 – Verify: 7286440 ends in 0 (÷5 ✓) and last three digits 440 (÷8 ✓).

Hence * = 4 and $ = 0 — option (3) 4 and 0.
