What is the reaction between an acid and a base called?
Neutralisation
When an acid reacts with a base, the \(\text{H}^+\) of the acid combines with the \(\text{OH}^-\) of the base to form water, while the remaining ions form a salt:
\[\text{Acid} + \text{Base} \rightarrow \text{Salt} + \text{Water}\]
The acidic and basic properties cancel out, so this reaction is called Neutralisation. Desalination, crystallisation and sublimation are physical processes, not acid–base reactions.
