What is the primary function of the citric acid cycle (Krebs’ Cycle) in cellular respiration ?
Production of ATP
The citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle) runs in the mitochondrial matrix. Acetyl-CoA, formed from carbohydrates, fats and proteins, combines with oxaloacetate and is oxidised step by step to CO2.
Each turn yields 1 ATP (GTP) directly and, more importantly, 3 NADH and 1 FADH2. These carry electrons to the electron transport chain, where most of the cell's ATP is produced. The cycle's main role in cellular respiration is thus to drive ATP production.
Oxidation of glucose as a whole begins in glycolysis, not in the Krebs cycle; protein synthesis happens on ribosomes; and fatty acid breakdown (beta-oxidation) is a separate pathway that feeds acetyl-CoA into the cycle.
Hence, the primary function of the Krebs cycle is the production of ATP.

In eukaryotic cells, covalently attached lipids help to anchor some water soluble proteins to the plasma membrane. One group of cytosolic proteins are anchored to the cytosolic face of membrane by a fatty acyl group (e.g. myristate or palmitate). These groups are generally covalently attached to which amino acids present at the N‐terminus of the polypeptide chain?
