MH SET 2024 Paper 2 Computer Science and Applications Question Paper (07-Apr-2024)
The correct answer is

Pyruvate

Glycolysis is the first stage of glucose breakdown and takes place in the cytoplasm. Through ten enzyme-controlled steps, one six-carbon glucose molecule is split into two three-carbon molecules of pyruvate (pyruvic acid).

The process gives a net gain of 2 ATP and 2 NADH, so ATP is a by-product rather than the product glucose is converted into.

Pyruvate then has two fates: with oxygen it enters the mitochondria and is converted to acetyl-CoA for the Krebs cycle; without enough oxygen it is reduced to lactic acid. Both acetyl-CoA and lactic acid are therefore formed after glycolysis, from pyruvate.

Hence, during glycolysis glucose is converted into pyruvate.
