UGC NET 2019 Paper 1 Question Paper (5-Dec-2019) (Shift 2)
The correct answer is

(a), (c), (d)

Surface ozone (ground-level or tropospheric ozone) is a secondary pollutant. Unlike stratospheric ozone, it is not emitted directly but is formed near the ground through photochemical reactions among precursor pollutants in the presence of sunlight.

The key ingredients are the oxides of nitrogen (NOx), volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide, which react in the presence of solar ultraviolet radiation (sunlight) to generate ozone. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons supply the reactive carbon species, oxides of nitrogen cycle to release the oxygen atom that combines with O2 to form O3, and sunlight provides the energy that drives the photochemistry. Therefore the trio that plays the important role is oxides of nitrogen, sunlight and carbon monoxide.

The choice built around oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulphur and sunlight is wrong because oxides of sulphur are chiefly responsible for acid rain and particulate haze, not for photochemical ozone formation. The set of oxides of sulphur, sunlight and carbon monoxide is wrong for the same reason, since it drops the essential oxides of nitrogen and wrongly adds sulphur oxides. The set of oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulphur and carbon monoxide is wrong because it omits sunlight, without which the photochemical reaction that creates ozone cannot proceed.

Correct answer: (a), (c), (d)
