The correct answer is

decreases

The amount of oxygen that can remain dissolved in water is governed by the physical principle that the solubility of a gas in a liquid decreases as the temperature of the liquid rises. Therefore, with an increase in temperature, the dissolved oxygen (DO) content of a water body decreases. Warmer water holds less oxygen; additionally, higher temperatures speed up the metabolic and respiratory activity of aquatic organisms and microbial decomposition, which consumes oxygen faster and lowers DO still further. This is why thermal pollution from industrial discharge is harmful to aquatic life.

The correct response is that dissolved oxygen decreases.

The option that DO increases is wrong because gas solubility falls, not rises, with temperature. The option that it remains constant is incorrect because DO is clearly temperature-dependent and does change. The option that it may increase or decrease depending on the temperature range is wrong because the relationship is consistently inverse across the normal range of natural water temperatures: as temperature goes up, dissolved oxygen goes down.

Correct answer: decreases
