Write notes in 150 words:
Taxonomic status of Ramapithecus in the light of Ramapithecus-Sivapithecus controversy

Ramapithecus, once thought to be the earliest ancestor of humans, sparked significant debate in paleoanthropology. Initially discovered in the Siwalik Hills, its jaw and dental features seemed closer to hominins than apes. Researchers believed its parabolic dental arch and smaller canines suggested a step toward human evolution. However, later discoveries of more complete fossils blurred this distinction. Sivapithecus, found in the same region, shared striking similarities with modern orangutans, particularly in facial structure. Over time, many scholars argued that Ramapithecus was not a separate genus but rather a female or variant form of Sivapithecus, representing an ape lineage rather than a direct human ancestor. Modern analysis, using advanced methods, supports this view, placing Ramapithecus within the broader Sivapithecus group. The controversy highlights the complexity of fossil interpretation and the caution needed in drawing evolutionary conclusions from fragmentary evidence.
