Non-Alignment 2.0, articulated by Indian scholars and strategists in the 2010s, reinterprets the original non-alignment doctrine for a post-Cold War, multipolar world. While Nehru’s Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) aimed at staying outside Cold War blocs, Non-Alignment 2.0 envisions a proactive India shaping the rules of globalization, aspiring to be a “site for alternative universality.”

This aspiration rests on several pillars. First, it emphasizes strategic autonomy—not isolation—but the ability to engage with all powers without subordination. Second, it situates India as a bridge between developed and developing worlds, advocating for fairer institutions that reflect the diversity of global voices.

Unlike the defensive posture of old NAM, Non-Alignment 2.0 is future-oriented. It highlights areas where India can provide leadership: inclusive economic growth, digital governance, climate responsibility, and South-South cooperation. By combining democratic values with development experience, India projects itself as a normative power offering alternatives to both Western liberal hegemony and authoritarian state-led capitalism.

In this sense, “alternative universality” means India presenting a model of pluralist, decentralized globalization, where no single bloc dominates. It resonates with Global South countries still wary of great-power rivalry.

Non-Alignment 2.0 thus represents an ambitious vision: India as not merely a balancer, but a shaper of global norms, advancing universality rooted in inclusivity and equity.
