Latin America has made moderate success in countering US-led global economic order by forming various organizations emphasizing regional sovereignty, economic integration and alternative development. Discuss.
Latin America has long sought to challenge the US-led economic order by asserting regional sovereignty, promoting integration, and developing alternative pathways. The region’s initiatives have produced moderate but meaningful progress, expressed through organizations with distinct strategies.
MERCOSUR, established in 1991, aimed to build a common market among major South American economies. Beyond economic integration, it served as a forum for political coordination, enhancing bargaining power in global trade and partially countering US influence.
The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), founded by Cuba and Venezuela, offered a more ideological counter-narrative. Rejecting neoliberalism and free-market orthodoxy, it promoted solidarity-based trade, social programs, and socialist principles. While economic impact was limited by small membership and Venezuela’s crisis, ALBA highlighted alternative development models.
UNASUR represented a bold attempt at continental unity, envisioning integration across political, economic, and defense spheres. Although weakened by political divergences, its creation of a Defense Council and initiatives like the Bank of the South reflected ambitions for autonomy.
CELAC, excluding the US and Canada, further asserted independence by fostering Latin American and Caribbean unity. It provided a platform for dialogue, regional identity, and collective action on global issues, distinct from US-dominated forums.
Despite achievements, these organizations face challenges—political instability, ideological divides, and economic dependency limit their effectiveness. Yet, they mark significant steps toward regional agency. By fostering South-South cooperation, reducing reliance on external powers, and experimenting with alternative models, Latin America has carved out more space in global governance. Success has been moderate, but the aspiration to counterbalance US dominance remains a defining feature of the region’s international strategy.
