In which year was the Vernacular Press Act passed ?
1878
The Vernacular Press Act was passed in 1878 during the viceroyalty of Lord Lytton to control newspapers published in Indian languages.
It allowed the government to seize the press and materials of a vernacular paper that printed matter seen as seditious, with no appeal to a court of law, so critics called it the gagging Act.
Lord Ripon repealed it in 1882. The year 1857 marks the Revolt and 1905 the Partition of Bengal, so neither of them is the year of this law.
Hence, 1878.
