In an examination, 120 questions were asked. As there was negative marking, Reena decided not to attempt 15 questions. Each question carried 2 marks. 80% of her questions were correct. 1 mark is deducted for a wrong answer. How many marks did Reena get in this examination?

The correct answer is

147

Total questions = 120, of which Reena did not attempt 15 questions, so she attempted 120 − 15 = 105 questions.

80% of the attempted questions were correct, so correct answers = 80% of 105 = 84.

The remaining attempted questions were wrong = 105 − 84 = 21.

Each correct answer carries 2 marks, so marks from correct answers = 84 × 2 = 168.

Each wrong answer loses 1 mark, so marks deducted = 21 × 1 = 21.

Total marks scored = 168 − 21 = 147.

Hence, Reena scored 147 marks in the examination.
