The correct answer is
60%

Understanding the Problem

We need to find the percentage of people working in flour mills who have asthma. We are given:

  • Percentage of the population with asthma: 20%
  • Percentage of asthma patients working in flour mills: 90%
  • Percentage of the total population working in flour mills: 30%

Calculating Asthma Prevalence in Flour Mills

Let the total population be represented by P.

  1. Calculate the proportion of the total population that has asthma AND works in flour mills:

    Proportion = (Population with Asthma) * (Asthma patients in Flour Mills)

    Proportion = (20% of P) * (90%)

    Proportion = $0.20 \times 0.90 \times P = 0.18 \times P$

    So, 18% of the total population has asthma and works in flour mills.

  2. Identify the total proportion of the population working in flour mills:

    Given directly: 30% of P, or $0.30 \times P$.

  3. Calculate the conditional probability (Percentage of flour mill workers with asthma):

    This is the ratio of people having asthma and working in flour mills to the total number of people working in flour mills.

    Percentage = $\frac{\text{People with Asthma in Flour Mills}}{\text{Total People in Flour Mills}} \times 100\%

    Percentage = $\frac{0.18 \times P}{0.30 \times P} \times 100\%

    Percentage = $\frac{0.18}{0.30} \times 100\%

    Percentage = $\frac{18}{30} \times 100\%

    Percentage = $\frac{3}{5} \times 100\%

    Percentage = $0.6 \times 100\% = 60\%$

Therefore, 60% of the people working in flour mills are suffering from asthma.
